How to Book Inca Trail Permits

How to Book Inca Trail Permits

The Inca Trail is one of the most legendary treks on the planet. Four days. Forty-two kilometers. Andean cloud forest, snow-capped passes, hidden Inca ruins — and then, at dawn on the final morning, the Sun Gate opens in front of you and Machu Picchu appears below. There is nothing quite like it.

But getting there requires something most travelers underestimate: a permit system so strict and so competitive that it can make or break your entire Peru trip. This guide explains exactly how it works, what it costs, step by step how to book it, and what to do if your dates are already gone.

The single most important thing to know: You cannot book an Inca Trail permit on your own. Every trekker must go through a government-licensed tour operator. And for peak season dates, those permits can sell out within hours of going on sale — months before you travel.

What Is an Inca Trail Permit?

An Inca Trail permit is the official pass issued by Peru’s Ministry of Culture that authorizes you to enter and hike the trail on a specific date. The system was introduced in 2002 after UNESCO threatened to remove the site’s World Heritage status. Before that, up to 1,600 people started the trail every single day, trekkers camped inside the ruins, garbage was left across the trail, and the damage was severe. The permit system fixed that. It also made the permits extremely hard to get.

Every permit is issued to a specific person, linked directly to their passport number. You cannot transfer it, lend it, or change the name on it once it is issued. If your passport details are entered incorrectly at the time of booking, the permit will be invalid at the checkpoint.

How Many Permits Are Available?

The Peruvian government issues a maximum of 500 permits per day for the Classic 4-Day Inca Trail. That sounds like a lot until you understand the breakdown.

Roughly 300 of those 500 permits are reserved for support staff: licensed guides, cooks, porters, and camp assistants. That leaves approximately 200 permits per day for actual trekkers. Those 200 spots must be shared across every tour operator running departures that day, every group size, and every nationality traveling to Peru.

For the Short 2-Day Inca Trail, a separate daily limit of 250 permits applies, with about 70% allocated to trekkers.

During peak season — roughly May through August — those 200 daily trekker spots disappear fast. Very fast. On the day 2026 permits went on sale (November 17, 2025), April, May, and June dates sold out within hours. By April 2026, the entire months of April, May, and June are fully booked for the 4-Day Classic.

The Big 2026 Change: Machu Picchu Entry Is Now Separate

This is critical and catches many travelers off guard. Starting in 2026, your Inca Trail permit no longer automatically includes your Machu Picchu entry ticket. The two systems are now separate purchases.

Your Inca Trail permit now includes one Circuit 3 entry to Machu Picchu on your arrival day. However, if you want to explore the full citadel via Circuit 2 (the classic, most complete route), you must purchase an additional separate ticket through tuboleto.cultura.pe before you travel. That ticket costs approximately $62 per person and must be purchased well in advance, as it also sells out.

In practice this means: book your Inca Trail permit first through a licensed operator, then immediately go to the official government ticket platform and book your Machu Picchu entry for your arrival day. Do not leave this second step for later.

Step by Step: How to Book Your Inca Trail Permit

Step 1 — Decide on your trek version first

There are several Inca Trail options, each with its own permit category:

  • Classic Inca Trail — 4 Days / 3 Nights: The full original route from Km 82 to the Sun Gate. 42km. Crosses three mountain passes including the infamous Dead Woman’s Pass (Warmiwañusca) at 4,215 meters. The most sought-after trek in South America. See our Classic Inca Trail 4 Days
  • Short Inca Trail — 2 Days / 1 Night: Starts at Km 104, covers the final and most scenic section of the original route. 12km. Passes through the Wiñaywayna ruins and arrives at Machu Picchu via the Sun Gate on day two. Easier to get permits for. See our Short Inca Trail 2 Days
  • Inca Trail 5 Days / 4 Nights: Extended version of the Classic that adds an extra acclimatization and exploration day in the Sacred Valley before the trail begins. Ideal for travelers who want a slower pace.

Step 2 — Choose a licensed tour operator (the only legal route)

You cannot buy an Inca Trail permit independently. There is no legal workaround. The Peruvian Ministry of Culture sells permits exclusively to government-authorized tour operators, who then purchase the permit in your name using your exact passport details.

When choosing an operator, check for:

  • Official authorization from the Ministry of Culture and SERNANP (Peru’s national parks authority)
  • Clear inclusion of permits, guide, porters, all meals, camping equipment, and transfers in the quoted price
  • Porter welfare standards — legally, no porter may carry more than 20kg including personal gear. If you see a price well below $600, it is likely the operator is cutting corners on porter pay and weight limits. A responsible price for a well-run 4-day group trek is typically $750–$900 per person
  • Group size — smaller groups (8–12 trekkers) offer a better experience than budget operators running 16+

Machu Picchu Peru Travel is a licensed operator with Ministry of Culture authorization. We handle the full permit procurement process on your behalf, including the passport data submission, permit confirmation, and coordination of your Machu Picchu entry ticket for arrival day. Contact us to check current permit availability.

Step 3 — Provide your exact passport details

This is where many bookings go wrong. Your permit is issued using the following information, all of which must be exactly as written in your passport:

  • Full legal name (exactly as on your passport, including middle names if shown)
  • Passport number
  • Passport expiration date
  • Date of birth
  • Nationality

Once issued, these details cannot be changed under any circumstances. There are no corrections, no name changes, no transfers. If your passport number on the permit does not match the physical passport you present at the trail checkpoint, you will be turned away. This is enforced without exception.

Make sure you are traveling on the same passport you used for the booking. If your passport expires before your trek date, renew it first and provide the new number.

Step 4 — Pay your deposit to secure the permit

Most licensed operators require a deposit of $200–$250 per person to initiate the permit reservation. This deposit is used to secure your slot in the government permit system at the moment sales open. The balance is typically due 30–60 days before departure.

Permits are non-refundable once purchased. If you cancel, you lose the permit cost. Some operators offer partial credit or rebooking for a different date at an administrative fee of around $25 per person, but this depends on the operator’s policy. Confirm cancellation terms before paying.

Step 5 — Pre-register with your operator before permits go on sale

This is the strategy that makes the difference. Licensed operators take pre-registrations before the official permit release date each year. When the Ministry of Culture opens sales — typically in the first or second week of November for the following year — operators with pre-registered clients immediately purchase their permits.

If you wait until after the public sale date to contact an operator, the best dates will already be gone. Pre-register with no obligation or upfront payment, and your operator will purchase the permit the moment it becomes available for your date.

When Do Permits Go on Sale?

Inca Trail permits for the following year are typically released in October or November. For 2026, the Ministry of Culture opened sales on November 17, 2025. Permits for 2027 are expected to go on sale in a similar window in October–November 2026.

Permits sell out in batches as operators purchase their allocations. Peak season dates (April–August) can disappear within a single day of release. Shoulder season dates (September–October, March) generally remain available for several weeks after the sale opens but also fill quickly as the season approaches.

Booking timeline by season

  • May, June, July, August (peak): Book 5–6 months in advance. Ideally pre-register with an operator before November so your permit is secured on day one of sales.
  • April, September, October (shoulder): Book 3–4 months in advance.
  • March, November, December, January (off-peak): Book 1–2 months in advance. The Short Inca Trail can sometimes be booked just a few weeks out during these months.
  • February: The trail is fully closed for annual maintenance and ecological recovery. No permits are issued. The trail reopens in the first week of March.

What Does It Cost?

The Inca Trail permit is not sold as a standalone product. You pay for a full tour package, and the permit cost is included within that price. Here is what you can expect to pay in 2026:

Classic 4-Day Inca Trail (most popular)

  • Budget operators: $550–$650 per person. Larger groups (14–16), basic camping equipment, standard meals. All required permits and licensed guide included.
  • Mid-range (recommended): $750–$900 per person. Groups of 8–12. Quality camping gear, better food, porter welfare standards, pick-up and drop-off included.
  • Premium / private: $1,000–$2,000 per person. Private group, smaller teams, superior equipment, gourmet meals on the trail.
  • Luxury: $2,000–$5,000 per person. Extended itineraries, lodge accommodation on some nights, expert naturalist guides, personalized service.

Short 2-Day Inca Trail

  • Typically $480–$700 per person depending on operator and inclusions. Includes permit, guide, meals, train, bus, and accommodation in Aguas Calientes.

Additional costs to budget for

  • Machu Picchu Circuit 2 entry ticket (new in 2026): ~$62 per person, purchased separately via tuboleto.cultura.pe
  • Tips for guides and porters: $60–$80 per trekker total is the standard. This is not optional — porters earn their income largely through tips and it matters.
  • Personal porter (optional): $80–$120 extra. Recommended if you have back or knee issues, or simply want to hike lighter.
  • Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain permit (optional): $50–$85 extra, booked separately and well in advance.
  • Sleeping bag rental (if not included): $15–$25. Confirm with your operator whether this is included — nights at high altitude camps get very cold.

A note on prices that seem too low: If an operator is quoting the Classic 4-Day at under $550, it is likely they are overloading their porters, underpaying staff, or cutting corners on equipment. Porters are legally limited to 20kg including their own gear. A responsible operator cannot run a proper 4-day trek below around $700 while paying fair wages. The money you save comes directly out of the pocket of the people carrying your gear.

What Is Included in a Standard Tour Package?

A well-run Classic 4-Day Inca Trail package with a mid-range operator typically includes:

  • Inca Trail trekking permit (in your name, linked to your passport)
  • Licensed bilingual guide (Spanish/English) for all 4 days
  • Porters to carry group camping equipment
  • All meals during the trek: breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and afternoon tea
  • Camping equipment: tent, sleeping mat, dining tent, kitchen tent, toilet tent
  • Bus from Aguas Calientes up to Machu Picchu on day 4
  • Return train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo and transfer to Cusco
  • Entrance to archaeological sites along the trail (Wiñaywayna, Phuyupatamarca, etc.)

Not always included and worth confirming before booking:

  • Sleeping bag (some operators include, others rent separately)
  • Machu Picchu Circuit 2 entry ticket (now a separate purchase in 2026)
  • Tips for guides and porters
  • Personal porter
  • Travel insurance

What You Must Bring to the Trail Checkpoint

At every entry checkpoint — most commonly at Km 82 for the Classic trail and Km 104 for the Short trail — you will need to present:

  • Your original physical passport. Photocopies and digital images are not accepted under any circumstances. The document you present must match the passport number on your permit exactly.
  • Your Inca Trail permit, which your operator will provide to you before departure.

Do not pack your passport in a porter bag. Keep it with you in your daypack at all times on the trail.

The Trail Itself: What to Expect

The Classic 4-Day Inca Trail covers 42km through extraordinary landscape. Here is what each day looks like:

  • Day 1 (Km 82 to Wayllabamba): The warm-up. Relatively gentle terrain through farming communities and cloud forest. Distance: ~12km. You pass the ruins of Llactapata with your first views of snow-capped Salkantay.
  • Day 2 (Wayllabamba to Pacaymayo): The hardest day. The long climb to Dead Woman’s Pass (Warmiwañusca) at 4,215 meters (13,829 ft). This is the highest point of the trek. Most people find it genuinely tough. Altitude, steep stone steps, and distance combine. Then a descent to camp. ~12km.
  • Day 3 (Pacaymayo to Wiñaywayna): The most beautiful day. Two more passes, then the spectacular descent through cloud forest to the Wiñaywayna ruins, one of the most impressive Inca sites on the trail. ~16km.
  • Day 4 (Wiñaywayna to Machu Picchu): The payoff. A pre-dawn wake up, a final 2km hike to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), and then — Machu Picchu below you in the morning light. Then down into the citadel for your guided visit. Return by bus and train to Cusco. ~2km of hiking.

How Fit Do You Need to Be?

Honest answer: reasonably fit, but not an athlete. The trail is graded moderate to challenging. Day 2 is the real test — about 1,200 meters of altitude gain over 6–7 hours, mostly on steep stone steps, starting at 3,000 meters above sea level. Most people who train for 6–8 weeks beforehand manage it without major difficulty.

Recommended preparation:

  • Arrive in Cusco at least 2–3 days before the trek to acclimatize. Do not attempt the trail without acclimatization days. Altitude sickness on Day 2 can end your trek.
  • Train with weighted hiking on stairs and inclines in the 6–8 weeks before travel.
  • Wear your hiking boots on training walks — do not arrive with new, unbroken footwear.
  • Hydrate aggressively in Cusco. Coca tea helps. Avoid alcohol your first days at altitude.

The Best Time to Hike the Inca Trail

  • Dry Season (May – October): Best weather. Clear skies, lower chance of rain, ideal trail conditions. June, July, and August are peak with the most demand and the most beautiful days. Permits sell out first for these months.
  • Shoulder Season (April, September–October): Very good conditions, slightly fewer people, better permit availability. April can still have occasional rain. September and October are arguably the best months — weather is good and crowds are lighter.
  • Rainy Season (November – March, excluding February): More precipitation, lush green landscapes, far fewer trekkers on the trail, and much easier permit availability. The trail is wet but not impassable. If you don’t mind rain gear and muddy conditions, this is an excellent and atmospheric time to go.
  • February: Closed. No exceptions.

If Inca Trail Permits Are Sold Out for Your Dates

The Classic 4-Day is sold out for April, May, and June 2026. If your dates are gone, you have excellent alternatives that still get you to Machu Picchu on foot, with the same dramatic arrival through mountain scenery — just without the specific Inca Trail permit requirement.

Trekking alternatives that include Machu Picchu

  • Salkantay Trek — 5 Days: No permit required. Crosses the 4,600m Salkantay Pass beneath a glacier. Widely considered the most spectacular alternative to the Inca Trail. Strong with adventurous hikers.
  • Lares Trek — 4 Days: Passes through traditional Quechua weaving communities in the high Andes. Cultural immersion + mountain scenery + Machu Picchu at the end. Far fewer trekkers than the Inca Trail.
  • Inca Jungle Trek — 4 Days: Biking, rafting, zip-lining, and hiking combined into one route ending at Aguas Calientes. Popular with younger travelers. No permit required.
  • Humantay Lake + Salkantay Pass — 2 Days: A shorter trekking option combining the turquoise glacial lake with a Machu Picchu visit.
  • Huchuy Qosqo Trek to Machu Picchu — 3 Days: A hidden gem route combining a lesser-known Inca citadel above Cusco with the trek to Machu Picchu.
  • Huchuy Qosqo + Inca Trail — 4 Days: Combines both sites in one itinerary.
  • Choquequirao Trek: If Machu Picchu itself is sold out, this is the most rewarding alternative in Peru. Larger than Machu Picchu, only ~30 visitors per day, reached by a 4-day trek through the spectacular Apurimac Canyon.

You can also combine any of the above treks with other Cusco experiences before or after:

Quick Reference: The Most Common Permit Mistakes

  • Waiting too long: The single most common problem. If you are considering the Inca Trail for June, July, or August, you needed to book in November. If you are reading this in March for a May trip, contact us immediately — there may still be Short Trail or shoulder month availability.
  • Booking flights before securing the permit: Never. Book the permit first. Then book flights. The permit is the hard part. Flights are easy.
  • Incorrect passport details: Double-check every character. Middle names, exact spelling, passport number. One wrong digit and you are turned away at the checkpoint with no refund.
  • Assuming the Machu Picchu ticket is included: As of 2026, it is not automatically included for all circuits. Book the Circuit 2 entry separately via tuboleto.cultura.pe immediately after confirming your trail permit.
  • Choosing an operator based only on price: The cheapest operators achieve low prices by overloading and underpaying porters. A responsible trek costs more. It is worth it.
  • Skipping acclimatization: Altitude sickness on Day 2 at 4,215 meters is the most common reason treks are abandoned. Spend at least 2 full days in Cusco before starting the trail.
  • Booking the wrong passport: If you renew your passport between booking and travel, your permit becomes invalid. Contact your operator immediately to check if this can be corrected — in most cases it cannot.

Ready to Secure Your Permit?

The Inca Trail is one of those experiences that, if it is on your list, deserves to actually happen. The permit system is strict, the timeline is tight, and the most common reason people miss it is simply waiting too long. Everything else about the trip — flights, hotels, extra days in Cusco — can be figured out after the permit is confirmed.

Get the permit first. Get it now. Then plan the rest.
