But before we get into the options, there’s one thing every traveler in 2026 needs to know:

⚠ Tickets are selling out months in advance. The Ministry of Culture has confirmed that all 1,000 in-person tickets for April 4 (Holy Week) sold out completely — and no extra capacity was added. Option 1: The Budget Adventurer (Lowest Cost Possible)

You love a scenic journey, you don’t mind a long day, and saving money is the priority. This route is for you.

Step 1 — Fly to Lima, then connect to Cusco

No U.S. airline flies directly to Cusco, so you’ll land in Lima first. From there, grab a round-trip domestic flight to Cusco for $70–$125. Book early enough and you can sometimes get it cheaper. Once in Cusco, give yourself at least 2 full days to acclimatize — Cusco sits at 3,400 meters (11,150 ft) and altitude sickness is real. Drink coca tea, stay well hydrated, skip the alcohol, and take it slow.

Step 2 — Bus to the Hydroelectric Station (~$25)

From Cusco, take an 8-hour bus to the Hydroelectric Train Station near Santa Teresa. It gets you through spectacular Andean scenery you simply won’t see from the train. From the Hydroelectric Station, walk 2–3 hours along the railway tracks to Aguas Calientes. The walk is flat, safe, and genuinely beautiful — it follows the Urubamba River through cloud forest. Pack a daypack and leave your main bag in storage at your Cusco hotel, as this route is not comfortable with large luggage.

Step 3 — Stay overnight in Aguas Calientes ($12–$25/night)

Budget hostels in Aguas Calientes start at around $12–$25 per night. Book ahead, especially during Holy Week, Christmas, and June–August — the town gets very full during holidays and the only way out is by train.

Step 4 — Secure your entry ticket ($62 for Circuit 2)

Buy online in advance at tuboleto.cultura.pe — do not leave this until you arrive. If online tickets are sold out, the Ministry of Culture sells up to 1,000 additional tickets per day at the Cultural Center in Aguas Calientes, starting at 6:00 AM, for entry the following day. These are first-come, first-served, cash only in Peruvian Soles, and each traveler must be physically present. During peak season, join the queue before 5:00 AM.

Step 5 — Bus or hike up to the citadel ($24 round trip, or free)

A 25-minute Consettur bus takes you from Aguas Calientes up to the entrance. Round-trip cost: $24. Rather save it? You can hike up on foot in about 1–1.5 hours via steep stone steps, at no cost. After a long travel day, most people take the bus up and hike back down.

Option 2: The DIY Traveler (Fastest + Most Comfortable Independent Route)

You want flexibility and you’re happy to manage your own bookings, but you also want a comfortable journey without spending 8 hours on a bus. This is the most popular independent option — and the one we recommend most for first-time visitors.

Step 1 — Transfer to Ollantaytambo + Train to Aguas Calientes

Take a shared transfer from Cusco to Ollantaytambo (about 1.5 hours, ~$15–$25) and board a scenic train into the cloud forest. The 1.5–2 hour journey is spectacular in itself — a highlight of any Peru trip.

Early morning departures (3:20 AM or 4:20 AM from Poroy) are cheapest and get you to Machu Picchu right when it opens at 6:00 AM.

Step 2 — Bus from Aguas Calientes to the entrance ($24 round trip)

Buy your Consettur bus ticket at the official booth in Aguas Calientes before joining the queue. During peak season, lines form very early — arrive at the booth well before your planned departure time.

Step 3 — Entry ticket ($62, booked in advance online)

Book at tuboleto.cultura.pe as soon as your travel dates are fixed. Entry is staggered by the hour. The 6:00 AM slot gets you the best morning light for photos and the fewest people. During the rainy season (November–March), the 9:00–11:00 AM window often works better since morning fog usually clears by then.

Step 4 — Optional: guide at the entrance ($60–$70)

Licensed guides wait near the bus stop in Aguas Calientes and at the citadel entrance. A good guide makes an enormous difference — Machu Picchu is rich in history and Inca cosmology that is easy to walk right past without context. Rates are around $60–$70 for a 2-hour tour and are negotiable.

Machu Picchu has strict rules. No food, no large bags, no tripods, no drones, no selfie sticks, no pets. Water in a reusable bottle is permitted. Eat a full breakfast in Aguas Calientes before heading up — you will need the energy and there is nothing to eat once inside.

Pack light: a small daypack with sunscreen (UV is intense at altitude), your reusable water bottle, a light rain jacket, your passport, and your printed or digital ticket. Leave everything else locked at your hotel.
