Qoricancha (Temple of the Sun): Qoricancha, or the “Golden Courtyard,” was the most important site dedicated to the worship of the sun god. The walls were once covered with sheets of gold. The convent now bearing the same name is built on this site with polished stone structures. It features a remarkable Renaissance-style doorway and a unique baroque tower, along with an impressive collection of paintings from the Cusco school.
Saqsayhuaman: The name Saqsayhuaman means “satisfied falcon” in Quechua. This fortress was constructed to protect the city of Cusco from eastern invaders and is a prime example of Inca military architecture. Built with massive granite blocks, some standing up to 5 meters high and weighing as much as 350 tons, it consists of three large terraces bordered by colossal stone walls extending up to 300 meters in length. Due to its proximity to Cusco, it also served as a quarry for some of the city’s colonial constructions.
Qenqo and Pucapucara: Qenqo is a large rocky promontory carved with holes, steps, and channels, likely used for depositing chicha (a corn-based drink) in Inca rituals. Pucapucara, near Qenqo, is another example of military architecture. This fortress features large walls, terraces, and stairways and was part of the defensive complex of Cusco and the Inca Empire.
Tambomachay: Known as the “Inca Bath,” Tambomachay was a ceremonial center dedicated to the worship of water and a resting place for the Inca monarch. It features an intricate hydraulic system with a series of aqueducts, canals, and waterfalls carved into the rock, designed to channel water from nearby springs.
