Cusco – Checacupe – Palcoyo – Cusipata
We start early, picking you up from your hotel between 4:30 and 5:00 AM. The drive to Cusipata takes about two hours. In this small, charming village, you’ll have breakfast and some free time to use the restrooms or buy snacks.
Next, we drive for another hour and a half to Palcoyo (4,200 meters / 13,780 feet), where the hike begins. You’ll see the Stone Forest and colorful mountains, showing you’re close to the Rainbow Range. After a short introduction from your guide, we start hiking. The climb is nice and takes about 30 minutes. Along the way, you might see South American camels. At the top, you’ll see the impressive Ausangate peak (6,380 meters / 20,900 feet).
This place is magical because nature has created these beautiful colors through minerals and erosion. We’ll have a short ceremony to honor Pachamama (Mother Earth) and give you time to take photos and explore the Rainbow Range and Stone Forest.
After enjoying the peaceful nature and the sacred mountains, we head back to Cusipata for lunch. Then, we return to Cusco, finishing the tour around 5:00 PM.

It’s best to join a tour with an authorized travel agency because Palcoyo is far from Cusco and not easy to reach on your own.
The Rainbow Range was created by tectonic plate collisions, forming layers of different colors and the Stone Forest through erosion over thousands of years.
Palcoyo is easier to reach and a good option for those not used to high altitudes but still want to see colorful mountains.
The dry season from April to October is the best time. During the rainy season, the colors aren’t as visible, and the route is harder.
Palcoyo Mountain is accessible year-round, but the optimal times are during the dry seasons from May to September and December to February. These periods offer clearer skies and more stable weather conditions, making for a safer and more enjoyable hike.
While independent hiking is possible, joining a guided tour can enhance your experience with local knowledge, ensure safety, and provide logistical support.
Palcoyo Mountain experiences a temperate climate with significant temperature variations between day and night. Expect mild to warm days during the hiking season and cooler nights.
At approximately 4,500 meters (14,764 feet), altitude can affect weather patterns, leading to sudden changes. Always be prepared for rapid weather shifts.
Spend a day acclimatizing at higher altitudes before your hike to reduce the risk of altitude sickness. Staying hydrated and avoiding strenuous activities upon arrival can help.
Familiarize yourself with the trail map beforehand. Marked trails are generally well-maintained, but having a GPS device or a local guide is advisable.
Dress in layers to adjust to temperature fluctuations. A typical layering system includes:
Wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support and traction to navigate rocky and uneven terrain.
Check if a permit is required for hiking Palcoyo Mountain. Some areas may have restrictions on the number of visitors to preserve the natural environment.
Certain trails may have restrictions based on weather conditions or conservation efforts. Always verify current access status before your trip.
A moderate to high level of physical fitness is recommended. Regular cardiovascular and strength training exercises will prepare you for the demands of the hike.
Incorporate hiking, trekking, or stair-climbing into your routine. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise most days leading up to your trip.
Gradually increase your elevation exposure prior to the hike. Consider spending a few days at higher altitudes to help your body adjust.

Ensure you are up-to-date with routine vaccinations. Depending on the region, additional vaccines may be recommended. Carry a basic medical kit with essentials.

Know the symptoms of altitude sickness and other common ailments. Have a plan in place for emergency evacuation if necessary.
