By Machu Picchu Peru Travel — Updated April 2026
The Salkantay Trek is one of the most spectacular long-distance hikes in South America — a 60–70 km journey from the high Andes to the edge of the Amazon, ending at Machu Picchu. But it crosses radically different ecosystems and altitudes in just four or five days, which means the weather is never a simple story.
At the Salkantay Pass (4,630 m / 15,190 ft), you are in a world of glaciers, thin air, and freezing wind. Six hours later, you are descending through cloud forest in humid warmth. The gap between those two worlds can mean a 20°C swing in a single afternoon. Getting the weather wrong — or being unprepared for it — is the most common reason people struggle on this trek.
This guide covers Salkantay Trek weather month by month, what each season actually feels like at altitude, what to pack, and the best time to go depending on what matters most to you.
The short version, for those who want it fast:
If you want a single recommendation: September is the sweet spot. The dry season is still holding, skies are clear, nights are cold but not brutal, and the trail is far quieter than July and August. May is a close second for the same reasons.
Ready to book? See our Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu.
Most mountain treks have one climate to prepare for. The Salkantay has four, sometimes in a single day.
The route begins near Cusco and rises to the Soraypampa base camp (around 3,900 m), where nights are already cold and frost is possible in any season. From there it climbs to the Salkantay Pass at 4,630 meters — the highest and most demanding point of the trek, where temperatures on a clear July night can drop to −5°C (23°F) or below, and where wind chill makes it feel much colder.
After the pass, the trail descends continuously for two days through cloud forest into the subtropical zone near Lucmabamba and Santa Teresa, where daytime temperatures reach 20–28°C (68–82°F) and the air becomes thick and humid. The final stretch into Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu sits at around 2,400 m — warmer, wetter, and entirely different from where you started.
The four micro-climates you will move through:
Even in peak dry season, you can leave a sunny camp in the morning, summit a freezing pass by mid-morning, and be sweating in jungle heat by afternoon. Layering is not optional on this trek — it is the entire strategy.
Note on UV exposure: Peru’s National Meteorology and Hydrology Service (SENAMHI) warns that high-altitude zones in the Cusco region experience extreme UV radiation during daylight hours. At 4,600 meters the atmosphere filters far less solar radiation than at sea level. Even on overcast days, UV exposure is significantly higher than most travelers expect. SPF 50+ sunscreen, UV-blocking sunglasses, and a wide-brim hat are not optional items — use them every day regardless of cloud cover.
| Month | Conditions | Crowd Level | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | Rainy, lush, muddy, frequent afternoon downpours, cloudy views at the pass | Low | Green scenery, quiet trails, budget travel |
| February | Wettest month of the year. Slippery descents, low visibility at altitude, possible trail disruptions | Very Low | Travelers who genuinely don’t mind rain |
| March | Still wet early, improving conditions from mid-month. Lush and dramatic landscapes | Low | Late wet-season atmosphere with gradually improving weather |
| April | Transition month. Rain decreasing. Green trails, some showers still possible, improving views | Low–Medium | Shoulder season with beautiful landscapes and manageable weather |
| May | Dry season begins in earnest. Clear skies, good trail conditions, cold nights, excellent mountain views | Medium | One of the two best overall months |
| June | Very dry, stunning views of Salkantay glacier, freezing nights at high camps | High | Clear skies and stable conditions, serious cold prep required |
| July | Driest month. Crystal clear mornings. Coldest nights (−5°C or below at high camps). Busiest period | Very High | Maximum weather reliability, requires full cold-weather kit |
| August | Still very dry. Strong winds at the pass. Cold nights. High demand for trains and Machu Picchu tickets | Very High | Firm trails and clear views, plan everything well in advance |
| September | Dry to mostly dry. Clearer mornings. Warmer feel. Noticeably fewer trekkers than August | Medium | Best overall balance of weather, scenery, and crowd levels |
| October | Good shoulder conditions. Warmer nights. Occasional afternoon showers increasing toward month’s end | Low–Medium | Fewer crowds, good views, landscapes starting to green up |
| November | Mixed. Mornings often clear, rain becoming more frequent especially in afternoons. Green and atmospheric | Low–Medium | Quiet trekking with the start of the lush wet-season scenery |
| December | Rain returning. Warmer lower sections. Cloudy afternoons. Festive season means some holiday crowds | Low–Medium | Green landscapes, fewer trekkers, requires good rain gear |
These are the three wettest months in the Cusco region. January and February are the peak of the rainy season, with heavy afternoon downpours almost guaranteed. The Salkantay Pass frequently disappears behind cloud, and views of the glacier can be completely obscured. Trails below the pass become muddy and slippery, particularly on the steep descent from the pass toward the valley. Snow is possible at high camps during these months, and temperatures at Soraypampa can feel brutal when cold rain arrives at night.
That said, the wet season has its own kind of beauty. The landscape is explosively green. Waterfalls are at full force, dramatically visible from the trail. And the trekkers who do go in these months often have the route almost entirely to themselves — a very different experience from the crowded July trail.
The critical advantage of the Salkantay over the Inca Trail in this period: the Salkantay route does not close in February. When the Inca Trail shuts down for its annual maintenance month, travelers who still want to arrive at Machu Picchu on foot turn to the Salkantay. Our Salkantay Trek runs year-round.
Most afternoon rain falls between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM. Starting each day’s hiking by 6:00–7:00 AM gets you to camp before the worst of it arrives. This is the guide’s approach on our wet-season departures and it makes a significant difference.
April is a transitional month. Rain becomes less frequent but is not gone. The landscapes still carry the lush green of the wet season, but skies start clearing more reliably, especially in the mornings. By May, the dry season is firmly established. Skies are typically clear, the glacier of Nevado Salkantay at 6,271 meters becomes spectacularly visible from the pass, and trail conditions are excellent.
The trade-off for these clear skies is cold. At Soraypampa (3,900 m) and higher, temperatures drop sharply after sunset. The diurnal temperature variation — the gap between daytime high and nighttime low — regularly exceeds 15–20°C in May and June. You can hike in a t-shirt at noon and need every layer you own at 8:00 PM. A quality sleeping bag rated to at least −5°C is essential.
June is excellent for experienced trekkers who want reliable conditions and are fully prepared for cold nights. For first-timers who underestimate the cold, it can be a rude surprise. Crowd levels in June are noticeably higher than April and May but have not yet reached the July and August peak.
July and August offer the most reliably dry conditions of the year. Morning views of the Salkantay glacier on a clear July dawn are among the most dramatic mountain experiences in South America — the kind of sight that justifies the entire trip. Rainfall is minimal and trails are firm underfoot.
The cost is cold and crowds. These are the coldest nights of the year at high altitude. At exposed camps near 4,000 meters, temperatures regularly fall to −5°C (23°F) and occasional nights can be colder. Wind at the Salkantay Pass amplifies the chill significantly. Trekkers who arrive with only light sleeping bags or insufficient insulating layers have a miserable time. A heavy down jacket, thermal base layers, a warm beanie, neck gaiter, and quality gloves are not luxury items in July — they are necessities.
These months also coincide with Peru’s high tourist season. Machu Picchu entry tickets sell out weeks in advance, trains book up fast, and Aguas Calientes accommodation fills quickly. If you are planning a July or August departure on our Salkantay Trek, book at least 3–4 months ahead and secure your Machu Picchu entry at the same time.
September is, for many experienced trekkers and our own guides, the single best month on the Salkantay. The dry season is still holding, skies are predominantly clear, the mountain views are outstanding, and the trail has noticeably fewer trekkers than July and August. Nights are cold but not brutal — a good −5°C sleeping bag handles it comfortably. Daytime temperatures in the highlands are pleasant for hiking, typically 15–20°C.
October is a strong second choice. Conditions are slightly warmer than September, landscapes begin showing early signs of the coming wet season’s greenery, and crowds are light. From mid-to-late October, afternoon showers become more likely, so a good rain jacket becomes important again. But for the first half of the month especially, October conditions can be near-ideal.
November is a transitional month in the opposite direction from April. The dry season is unwinding. Mornings are often clear and pleasant, but afternoon rain becomes increasingly reliable as the month progresses. The landscapes begin greening up beautifully. Trekker numbers are low, making it a genuinely peaceful time on the trail.
December sees rain returning more consistently. Lower sections of the trail — the cloud forest descent and the subtropical zone — become lush and dramatic. Nights at high camp are warmer than in the dry season months, which some trekkers prefer. The Christmas and New Year period brings a spike in visitors for the final days of December, so Machu Picchu tickets and trains book up quickly for December 28–January 2.
| Zone | Altitude | Day Temperature | Night Temperature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soraypampa camp | ~3,900 m (12,795 ft) | 10–15°C (50–59°F) | 0 to −5°C (32 to 23°F) |
| Salkantay Pass | 4,630 m (15,190 ft) | 5–12°C (41–54°F) | Not camped here, but exposed crossing |
| Wayracmachay / Chaullay | ~2,900 m (9,514 ft) | 15–20°C (59–68°F) | 8–12°C (46–54°F) |
| Lucmabamba / Santa Teresa | ~1,500–1,800 m (4,921–5,906 ft) | 22–28°C (72–82°F) | 14–18°C (57–64°F) |
| Aguas Calientes / Machu Picchu | ~2,040–2,430 m (6,693–7,972 ft) | 18–24°C (64–75°F) | 10–15°C (50–59°F) |
Rain protection is your top priority. Every item that could become wet and stay wet is a hazard at high altitude — wet clothing drops your core temperature fast. Avoid cotton entirely. It absorbs moisture and does not dry, making it a genuine hypothermia risk in cold, wet conditions.
These months require the most versatile packing because conditions shift dramatically within a single day. The core strategy is layering — pieces you can add and remove quickly as you move between altitude zones and as the sun moves through the sky.
Minimal rain gear needed, but maximum cold-weather preparation required. Do not underestimate the nights. Trekkers who bring a three-season sleeping bag to a July Salkantay Trek regularly regret it.
The Salkantay Pass at 4,630 meters is significantly higher than Cusco (3,400 m) and the approach to it is rapid. Altitude sickness on the second day of the trek is the most common reason departures are abandoned — and it is entirely preventable with proper acclimatization before you start.
Minimum recommended preparation:
Symptoms of altitude sickness to watch for: persistent headache that does not improve with water and rest, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, unusual fatigue, loss of coordination, or shortness of breath at rest. If any of these develop and do not improve, descend immediately. Our guides are trained to identify symptoms and will always prioritize your safety over completing the itinerary.
Both treks cover similar terrain in the Cusco highlands and share the same broad seasonal patterns. The key differences from a weather perspective:
Both treks are beautiful. Both involve the same weather patterns at similar altitudes. The choice between them comes down to permit availability, the high-pass experience, and how far you want to descend into the jungle. See our Classic Inca Trail 4 Days if that is your preference, or read below for all our Salkantay options.
No. Unlike the Inca Trail, the Salkantay route is not subject to a government-mandated closure in February. It operates year-round. February is the wettest month, with the most difficult conditions, but the route remains open. Our Salkantay Trek runs departures every month of the year.
No special trekking permit is required for the Salkantay route itself. You do need a Machu Picchu entry ticket for your arrival day, which must be booked separately via tuboleto.cultura.pe in advance. We handle this coordination for passengers booking through Machu Picchu Peru Travel.
During the crossing of the pass, which typically happens in the early morning of Day 2, temperatures with wind chill can feel like −10°C (14°F) or below in the dry season months of June, July, and August. Even in the warmer months (September–October), the pass crossing is cold. Every trekker should have warm gloves, a hat, a neck gaiter, and an insulating jacket accessible in their daypack for this section regardless of the season.
Snow is possible year-round at high altitude. During the rainy season (January–March), snow at the pass and at Soraypampa camp is not unusual. In the dry season, frost is far more common than snowfall, though brief snow flurries can occur at any time of year at the pass.
Yes, and many travelers do. The key is proper gear (fully waterproof jacket, waterproof boots, trekking poles) and realistic expectations about visibility and trail conditions. The landscapes in the rainy season are outstandingly beautiful — deeply green, with powerful waterfalls and far fewer other trekkers on the trail. With the right preparation it is an excellent and atmospheric experience.
June, July, and August offer the highest probability of a clear view of the glacier at 6,271 meters from the pass. September is almost as reliable and significantly less crowded. In the rainy season months (December–March), cloud cover often obscures the mountain, though clear morning windows do occur.
We run the Salkantay Trek year-round with departures every week. All packages include an experienced bilingual guide, camping equipment, all meals on the trail, and coordination of your Machu Picchu entry ticket.
If you want to combine the Salkantay with other Cusco experiences before or after:
If the Salkantay is not the right fit for your dates or fitness level, explore our other routes to Machu Picchu:
The Salkantay Trek rewards the trekkers who come prepared. The weather is part of what makes it extraordinary — the freezing pass at dawn, the cloud forest descent, the subtropical warmth near Santa Teresa, and then Machu Picchu. No other route to the citadel puts you through that range of landscapes and climates in a single journey.
Know your season. Pack for the cold at altitude, not just the warmth at the bottom. Acclimatize in Cusco before you start. And book your Machu Picchu entry ticket the moment your trek is confirmed — it sells out independently of the trek and is the most common logistical mistake on this route.
