Pisaq is located 35 km from Cusco, at an altitude of approximately 2,900 meters (9,514 feet). Here, you’ll find the famous Pisac market, renowned for its handicrafts, ceramics, textiles, silverware, food, paintings, and Andean music. In Pisac, you can witness the blending of traditional locally-produced goods with merchandise from other regions. Another attraction in Pisac is the ruins, considered one of the most beautiful sites near the city of Cusco. These ruins were fortresses built to protect the ceremonial capital of the Inca Empire against attacks. The site includes a cemetery, beautiful palaces, and a hydraulic platform with finely cut stones.
Continuing our journey along the Vilcanota River, we reach Urubamba, a city of Inca origin located 69 km northeast of Cusco. The city is surrounded by mountains, churches, and colonial houses, all set at an altitude of approximately 2,800 meters (9,186 feet). This is where we will have lunch, enjoying the pleasant weather and scenic surroundings.
Ollantaytambo is a town located 21 km from Urubamba, at an altitude of approximately 2,800 meters (9,186 feet). It is one of the few remaining living Inca towns and is situated at the opposite end of Pisac. The streets of Ollantaytambo still maintain the same layout as they did during the Inca era. The archaeological complex of Ollantaytambo served as a strategic military, religious, and agricultural center. Here, you will find the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana (solar clock), and the Princess Baths.
On the way back to Cusco, we come across the town of Chinchero, located 28 km from the city. The town sits at an altitude of approximately 3,762 meters (12,342 feet). Here, you can explore the remains of what was once the estate of Tupac Inca Yupanqui. Chinchero boasts a beautiful colonial temple built on Inca foundations. However, its main attraction is the market, which was originally dedicated to the barter of products between people from the valleys and highlands. Today, the market showcases a wide array of handicrafts and textiles made in a pre-Columbian style, creating a true spectacle of colors that fascinates tourists.
