Itinerary

DAY 1

Visit Chinchero, Moray and Visit to Misminay Rural Community

The Misminay tour with overnight starts at 7:30 am with a pick-up from your hotel in Cusco.

After a 1-hour journey through the Sacred Valley of the Incas, you’ll reach the town of Chinchero. Here, your guide will lead you through the local market and take you on a guided tour of the archaeological site and the Colonial Temple.

Next on the itinerary is a visit to the circular agricultural terraces of Moray, an experimental and research center used by the Incas due to its varying micro-climate and surrounding mountain range. After exploring Moray, you’ll head to the nearby Maras salt mines, a unique array of salt ponds formed into terraced steps and fed by an irrigation channel. Your guide will explain the traditional ‘mining’ methods of the local community and the historical importance of the salt mines in the region.

The final destination of the day is the nearby community of Misminay, where the residents will warmly welcome you with music and dance. You will then enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by your hosts using natural, local ingredients.

After lunch, you’ll embark on a tour of the town to learn about its customs and traditions, followed by a walk to a viewpoint that offers a stunning panorama of the entire Sacred Valley and the agricultural terraces of Moray.

You can participate in activities such as tilling the land, harvesting or planting crops, and giving thanks to Mother Earth, known as ‘Pachamama’. Alternatively, you can choose to learn about the textile-making processes, including spinning, weaving, and dyeing garments with natural ingredients. In this community, women traditionally oversee this important work, and they will share with you their ancestral techniques, passed down through generations.

As evening approaches, you will join your host family for dinner, don traditional regional costumes, and share stories and legends around a bonfire. Finally, you’ll return to the family home within the community to spend the night.

7:00 a.m. After enjoying breakfast with your host family, our transportation will arrive to pick you up and take you to Ollantaytambo Train Station.

9:15 a.m. You will board the train to Aguas Calientes, accompanied by your guide.

11:00 a.m. Your guide will lead you to the bus station, where you’ll catch the tourist bus to Machu Picchu. The scenic 30-minute bus ride from Aguas Calientes ascends the mountainside to the entrance of the Inca citadel. Once inside, you’ll embark on a 3-hour exploration of Machu Picchu’s rich history, guided by your personal tour guide. In addition to visiting renowned sites like the Temple of the Sun, the Central Plaza, and the stepped terraces, you’ll have ample opportunity to capture those iconic photos at the panoramic viewpoint of Machu Picchu before boarding the bus back down the mountain.

After reuniting with your guide and returning to Aguas Calientes by bus, there will be time to enjoy lunch at one of the town’s many restaurants (optional extra), before catching the train back to Ollantaytambo. We booked the private Machu Picchu experience for two, including a private car transfer from Cusco to the train station, the Vistadome train, and a private guided tour of the site. It is certainly a premium-priced experience, but for such a once-in-a-lifetime destination, I would absolutely do it again.Everything was perfectly organized from start to finish. Communication with Tania was excellent throughout the booking process. She was always responsive and helpful, and even came to our hotel the day before to hand over all our tickets, explain the itinerary in detail, and answer all our questions. That personal touch was greatly appreciated. When we arrived at the train station, our guide, Willy, warmly welcomed us and stayed with us throughout the entire visit. He was incredibly friendly, professional, and knowledgeable, sharing fascinating insights into the history, culture, and significance of Machu Picchu. His English was excellent, making every explanation easy to understand. He also knew all the best photo spots and helped us capture some unforgettable memories. To top it off, he recommended a very good restaurant (not included in the price) for after our visit, which was the perfect end to the visit while waiting for the return transfer.Be prepared for a long day from Cusco—our day started at 5:00 a.m. and we returned around 8:30 p.m. Most of the time is spent on transportation, transfers, and waiting (each way is around 4 hours: car+train+bus), while the visit to Machu Picchu itself lasts around 2.5 hours (we had booked Circuit 1, which offers the best views although you are not able to enter the village itself (this would be circuit 2). However, every minute is absolutely worth it.A big thank you to Tania and especially to Willy for making this unforgettable experience so smooth and enjoyable. Highly recommended!

Inti Raymi was well executed and choreographed performance and ceremony. The tour company did excellent in communicating how to meet , what to bring , how to get in and how to exit. It is the type of festival you get to do once just to experience it. It was very crowded though , and everything takes forever to do (like to get to your seat). Plan at least 2 hours before and after the show.

It was a super fun experience. Glad I did it but wouldn’t need to do it a second time. Machu Picchu Peru Travel was impeccable as always though! Great lunch that quinoa bowl was delicious. Fresh fruit. They guided us through everything kept it organized Willy was great and Tania was amazing setting it all up. The value is a weird thing for me to review because it was super cool experience and would never do it without tickets but I didn’t understand a lot because the ceremony didn’t even let the Spanish translator go off most of the time and then the English translator spoke very low. But like the festival was dope and neat. Lots of amazing performers and costumes but sat there a little lost. Value for Machu Picchu Peru travel is priceless though.
