Your journey begins early, between 4:30 and 5:00 AM, with a convenient pick-up from your hotel in Cusco. As the sun starts to rise, you’ll drive through the scenic Southern Valley of Cusco, taking in views of the Andes as you make your way to the starting point of the hike.
Around 8:00 AM, you’ll pause in the charming town of Cusipata for a hearty breakfast to fuel your adventure. By 8:50 AM, you’ll be back on the road, heading toward the Layo community, where your trek officially begins.
The first leg of the hike, from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM, takes you to the serene Laguna Pucacocha. Here, you’ll enjoy a delicious lunch while soaking in the spectacular alpine scenery. After lunch, the journey continues uphill toward Abra de Pucacocha, a high mountain pass where you’ll spot llamas grazing and marvel at the awe-inspiring views of Mount Ausangate.
By mid-afternoon, around 2:30 PM, you’ll begin your descent toward Ananta, your campsite for the night. You’ll arrive around 5:00 PM, ready to relax and enjoy a well-deserved dinner under the stars.
The second day begins early with breakfast at the campsite. As the first light touches the mountains, you’ll set off around 6:00 AM for a gradual ascent. Along the way, you’ll pass grazing llamas and catch glimpses of the vibrant hues of the surrounding mountains.
By 8:00 AM, you’ll reach the breathtaking Vinicunca Pass, standing at 5,080 m (16,696 ft). Here, the famous Rainbow Mountain reveals its natural beauty, with layers of vivid colors painting the landscape. You’ll have plenty of time, from 8:00 to 10:00 AM, to take in the views, capture photos, and savor the experience at the Vinicunca viewpoint.
Afterward, the descent begins. By 11:30 AM, you’ll arrive at Quesoyuno, where a satisfying lunch awaits. Once you’ve recharged, you’ll embark on the drive back to Cusco, enjoying the scenery one last time. You’ll arrive in Cusco by approximately 6:00 PM, with unforgettable memories of your adventure.
