Machu Picchu has a subtropical highland climate with two distinct seasons: dry season (May to October) and rainy season (November to April).
Dry season: Expect clear skies, mild temperatures during the day, and cooler temperatures at night. Rain is unlikely, but there may be occasional showers.
Rainy season: Rain showers are frequent, and the landscape is lush and green. Be prepared for rain and muddy trails, especially if visiting during this time.
Arrive Early: Catch one of the early buses from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu to avoid the crowds and enjoy the site in relative tranquility.
Stay Overnight: Consider spending a night in Aguas Calientes before or after your visit to Machu Picchu. This allows for a more relaxed experience and the opportunity to explore the town or soak in the hot springs.
Take Breaks: Machu Picchu involves a fair amount of walking and climbing stairs. Take breaks as needed, especially if you’re feeling fatigued or experiencing symptoms of altitude sickness.
Photography Tips: Capture the beauty of Machu Picchu by taking photos during different times of the day. Early morning and late afternoon provide softer lighting and fewer shadows, ideal for photography.
Respect Quiet Zones: Machu Picchu has designated quiet zones where visitors can meditate and connect with the spiritual energy of the site. Respect these areas by maintaining a quiet demeanor and refraining from loud conversations or disruptive behavior.
Dress in layers to accommodate changing temperatures throughout the day. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add a fleece or sweater for warmth, and top it off with a waterproof jacket if needed.
Opt for breathable, quick-drying fabrics that wick moisture away from the skin to stay comfortable during physical activities.
Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes with good traction for walking and climbing stairs.
Don’t forget to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the strong sun at high altitudes.
Machu Picchu involves walking on uneven terrain and climbing stairs. Visitors with mobility issues may find certain areas challenging to navigate.
Altitude sickness can affect individuals differently, regardless of age or fitness level. Take it slow, stay hydrated, and listen to your body. If you experience severe symptoms like dizziness, nausea, or shortness of breath, descend to a lower altitude immediately and seek medical attention if necessary.
Some activities, such as hiking Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, have age and health restrictions. Be sure to check the requirements and assess your physical fitness before attempting these hikes.
