Best Day Ever What an incredible experience! The whole day was carefully planned out for us and it all was well above anything we could have imagined! Our driver was amazing, very professional and helpful, the train provided views that were breathtaking and our Guide “Willie” was the best! Willie took us on the most incredible tour, he knew all the right places for pictures, his knowledge was amazing and he answered all of our questions and more. He provided a full day experience that was nothing short of perfection. This is the only way to go and see this; we’re definitely coming back!

Amazing experience, amazing tour guide It was one of the best experiences in our lives. We strongly recommend that anyone of moderate fitness and above to try it. It is good to have a pair of hiking shoes to make the experience better. Our guide (Willy) was amazing, he helped us a lot with the trail, he was well prepared and we didn't feel any risk at any moment. Also, he was very explanatory about inkas history and the monuments we saw during the trail. The quality of this experience is very related to the tour guide you will select. This guy was one of the best tour guides we had so far. There is no comparison to the other guides we had. We strongly recommend this experience with this guide. PS#1: bring a second t-shirt with you to change before you take the traditional photos of Machupicchu. Ps#2: Willy is a very good photographer, and gave guidance about the best place to take photos.

Travel Guide

Recommendations:

  • Book Tickets in Advance: Machu Picchu has a daily visitor limit, and tickets can sell out quickly, especially during peak seasons. Ensure you book your entrance tickets and any additional activities (such as hiking Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain) well in advance.
  • Acclimatize: Machu Picchu is located at a high altitude, and altitude sickness can affect some visitors. Spend a few days in Cusco (or other high-altitude destinations) before visiting Machu Picchu to acclimatize.
  • Early Start: Make the most of your time at Machu Picchu by starting your day early. The site is less crowded in the morning, providing a more serene and magical experience.
  • Guided Tour: Consider hiring a local guide to enhance your experience. Guides provide insightful information about the history, culture, and significance of Machu Picchu, enriching your visit.
  • Respect the Environment: Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Respect the rules and regulations, such as staying on designated paths, not climbing on the ruins, and avoiding littering.
  • Pack Light: You’ll be exploring Machu Picchu on foot, so pack only the essentials. A small daypack with water, snacks, sunscreen, a camera, and any necessary medications is sufficient.
  • Stay Hydrated and Sun Protected: The high altitude and strong sun at Machu Picchu can lead to dehydration and sunburn. Bring a refillable water bottle, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself.

Weather:

Machu Picchu has a subtropical highland climate with two distinct seasons: dry season (May to October) and rainy season (November to April).

Dry season: Expect clear skies, mild temperatures during the day, and cooler temperatures at night. Rain is unlikely, but there may be occasional showers.

Rainy season: Rain showers are frequent, and the landscape is lush and green. Be prepared for rain and muddy trails, especially if visiting during this time.

Tips:

Arrive Early: Catch one of the early buses from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu to avoid the crowds and enjoy the site in relative tranquility.

Stay Overnight: Consider spending a night in Aguas Calientes before or after your visit to Machu Picchu. This allows for a more relaxed experience and the opportunity to explore the town or soak in the hot springs.

Take Breaks: Machu Picchu involves a fair amount of walking and climbing stairs. Take breaks as needed, especially if you’re feeling fatigued or experiencing symptoms of altitude sickness.

Photography Tips: Capture the beauty of Machu Picchu by taking photos during different times of the day. Early morning and late afternoon provide softer lighting and fewer shadows, ideal for photography.

Respect Quiet Zones: Machu Picchu has designated quiet zones where visitors can meditate and connect with the spiritual energy of the site. Respect these areas by maintaining a quiet demeanor and refraining from loud conversations or disruptive behavior.

How to Dress:

Dress in layers to accommodate changing temperatures throughout the day. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add a fleece or sweater for warmth, and top it off with a waterproof jacket if needed.

Opt for breathable, quick-drying fabrics that wick moisture away from the skin to stay comfortable during physical activities.

Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes with good traction for walking and climbing stairs.

Don’t forget to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the strong sun at high altitudes.

Restrictions:

Machu Picchu involves walking on uneven terrain and climbing stairs. Visitors with mobility issues may find certain areas challenging to navigate.

Altitude sickness can affect individuals differently, regardless of age or fitness level. Take it slow, stay hydrated, and listen to your body. If you experience severe symptoms like dizziness, nausea, or shortness of breath, descend to a lower altitude immediately and seek medical attention if necessary.

Some activities, such as hiking Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, have age and health restrictions. Be sure to check the requirements and assess your physical fitness before attempting these hikes.

Physical Preparation:

  • While you don’t need to be an athlete to visit Machu Picchu, a basic level of fitness is beneficial. Walking, climbing stairs, and navigating uneven terrain are integral parts of the experience.
  • If you plan to undertake more strenuous activities like hiking Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, consider incorporating cardiovascular exercises, strength training, and hiking into your fitness routine in the weeks leading up to your trip.
  • Practice walking on uneven terrain and stairs to prepare your muscles and joints for the physical demands of exploring Machu Picchu.
  • Listen to your body and know your limits. Take breaks as needed, stay hydrated, and don’t push yourself beyond your capabilities.

By following these recommendations, preparing for the weather, adhering to tips, packing appropriately, dressing for the conditions, understanding limitations, and ensuring physical readiness.
