At elevations up to 6,384 meters (20,900 feet) at Ausangate, the high altitude can influence weather patterns, leading to colder temperatures and stronger winds. Travelers should be prepared for thinner air and potential altitude-related challenges.
Dress in layers to adapt to changing temperatures. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add an insulating middle layer, and finish with a waterproof and windproof outer layer.
Wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support and traction to navigate rocky and uneven terrains.
Travelers may require permits to enter certain areas of the Ausangate region. It’s essential to obtain the necessary documentation in advance and adhere to local regulations regarding trekking routes and camping.

The **Ausangate 7 Lakes** Tour involves strenuous hiking at high altitudes. A good level of physical fitness, including cardiovascular endurance and leg strength, is essential to handle the demanding terrain.
Gradually ascend to higher elevations to allow your body to adjust to the reduced oxygen levels. Consider spending a few days at intermediate altitudes before tackling the highest points of the tour.
Ensure that your routine vaccinations are up to date. Consult with a travel health specialist about recommended vaccines for Peru, such as those for hepatitis A and typhoid, and take precautions against insect-borne diseases.
