Look at any photograph of Machu Picchu and you will see it: the steep, cone-shaped mountain rising dramatically behind the citadel, wrapped in cloud forest and mist. That is Huayna Picchu. It appears in nearly every classic image of the ruins. And for travelers who want more than a look at Machu Picchu — for those who want to look down on it from above — the hike to the summit of Huayna Picchu is one of the most extraordinary short treks in the world.
It is also one of the hardest tickets in Peru to get. Only 350 people per day are allowed up. Tickets sell out 3–6 months in advance during peak season. And as of 2026, Huayna Picchu is closed for the entire month of June for trail maintenance and conservation work.
This guide covers everything: what the hike is actually like, how the ticket system works, what it costs, when to go, what to bring, and what to do if your date is sold out.
⚠ 2026 Closure Notice: Under Resolution No. 000317-2025, Huayna Picchu Mountain will be closed throughout all of June 2026 for maintenance and conservation of the Inca archaeological site and trails. If you have a ticket for a June date, the Ministry of Culture will issue a full refund. Plan accordingly.
Huayna Picchu (also written Wayna Picchu) is the pointed mountain that rises directly behind the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. Its name comes from Quechua, the language of the Incas, and means “Young Mountain” — a counterpart to Machu Picchu, which means “Old Mountain.”
The mountain stands at approximately 2,667–2,720 meters above sea level, roughly 300 meters (about 984 feet) above the Machu Picchu citadel itself. It sits 2 kilometers north of the ruins, surrounded by the Vilcanota (Urubamba) River canyon on three sides. At the summit and along the trail, visitors find genuine Inca structures: agricultural terraces, ceremonial platforms, stone stairways carved directly into the rock, and the remarkable Temple of the Moon on the mountain’s north face.
The mountain was not merely a scenic backdrop. Archaeological evidence suggests that Huayna Picchu was inhabited and used by the Incas as a ceremonial and agricultural site. The same Emperor Pachacutec who built Machu Picchu around 1450 AD is believed to have constructed the structures on Huayna Picchu as part of the larger sacred sanctuary. Some specialists believe the summit terraces were used for astronomical observations, aligned with the sun and stars in the same tradition as other Inca astronomical sites across the Andes.
Yes — with one honest caveat.
The view from the summit is genuinely unlike anything available from the citadel itself. Machu Picchu spreads out 300 meters below you in its entirety, the Urubamba River visible as a silver thread far below, the surrounding peaks of the Andes rising on all sides, and the cloud forest filling the valley. It is the view that explains why Machu Picchu looks the way it does in its famous photographs: taken from this exact vantage point.
The honest caveat: the hike is steep and the trail is exposed. Some sections involve near-vertical stone stairways carved into the cliff face, with rope handlines for support. If you have a significant fear of heights, this hike may not be right for you. If you have mild discomfort with heights but are otherwise fit and comfortable, most people manage it with care and a reasonable pace. More on difficulty below.
The Huayna Picchu hike is accessed from within Machu Picchu. You do not start from Aguas Calientes — you enter through the citadel first, complete part of Circuit 3 (the lower Royal Circuit), and then proceed to the Huayna Picchu access gate at the northern end of the site.
You register your name and passport number in a logbook kept by park rangers. This is a safety measure so that rangers know who is on the mountain at any given time. Do not skip this step — it is mandatory.
The trail begins with a short zigzag section of about 15–20 minutes covering approximately 300 meters of distance. The first section is steep but manageable. You then reach a fork. The path to the right continues up toward the summit. The path to the left descends around the base of the mountain toward the Temple of the Moon.
The main ascent to the summit involves more than 1,600 stone steps, many of them narrow and steep, with sections where you are essentially climbing rather than hiking. Rope handlines are installed at the most exposed and vertical sections. The trail is narrow throughout — passing another hiker requires care, and in the busiest months the trail can feel congested in both directions.
The ascent typically takes 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on your fitness and pace. Some fit trekkers move faster; there is no need to rush. The trail is one-way upward on the main ascent path.
The summit of Huayna Picchu features Inca terraces and ceremonial structures. The views are 360 degrees: Machu Picchu directly below to the south, the Urubamba canyon on three sides, the Andean peaks of Putucusi and Yanantin in the distance, and the town of Aguas Calientes visible in the valley below. Allow at least 20–30 minutes at the top for photographs and to simply absorb the perspective.
The descent follows a different, circular path from the ascent route. Many visitors find the descent more mentally demanding than the climb — steep stone steps facing downward with exposure below requires focus and deliberate footwork. Take your time. The descent takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour.
The total round-trip duration for the full Huayna Picchu hike is approximately 2 to 3 hours, not including your time in the Machu Picchu Circuit 3 sections before and after.
The Temple of the Moon is one of the most remarkable Inca structures in the entire Machu Picchu sanctuary. Built inside a natural cave on the north face of Huayna Picchu, it features finely carved ceremonial niches and stonework comparable in quality to the main temples inside Machu Picchu. Archaeologists believe this cave served as a ritual and ceremonial center — the Incas regarded natural caves (huacas) as portals to the spiritual world, places for communicating with their gods and ancestral spirits.
Important 2026 update: The route to the Temple of the Moon (Route 3C) requires a separate ticket (Circuit 3 + Great Cavern / Temple of the Moon) and is only available during high season (June 19 – November 2). The standard Huayna Picchu ticket (Route 3A) does not automatically include the Temple of the Moon detour. Check availability at tuboleto.cultura.pe when booking.
This is the most critical section. Many travelers arrive at Machu Picchu hoping to hike Huayna Picchu and discover on-site that tickets are sold out for weeks. The permit system for Huayna Picchu is strict, strictly enforced, and has no workaround.
To hike Huayna Picchu, you must purchase the Circuit 3 Route 3A: Huayna Picchu Mountain ticket. This is also known as the Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu (Wayna Picchu) ticket. It includes:
It does not include Circuit 2 (the classic route with the iconic panoramic viewpoint and full urban area). If you want that experience as well, you would need a separate Circuit 2 ticket on a different day. With the Huayna Picchu ticket you enter from the lower section, and re-entry to the main circuit is not permitted after completing your Huayna Picchu hike. Plan accordingly — you will not get the “postcard view” of Machu Picchu from the Guardian’s House on this ticket. What you get instead is the view from 300 meters directly above it.
The Ministry of Culture issues a maximum of 350 tickets per day for Huayna Picchu, divided into two entry groups:
The maximum time allowed for your entire visit — Circuit 3 plus Huayna Picchu hike — is 6 hours from your entry time. This is sufficient for a comfortable visit at a reasonable pace.
The Huayna Picchu ticket (including Circuit 3 entry to Machu Picchu) costs approximately 200 Peruvian Soles per person for foreign adult visitors. Student discounts are available with a valid student ID. Children under 12 are not permitted on the Huayna Picchu trail. Children 12 and older may hike accompanied by an adult.
Tickets must be purchased in advance through the official government platform: tuboleto.cultura.pe. Tickets are not sold at the site on the day of your visit. There is no legitimate way to purchase a Huayna Picchu ticket on arrival. If someone offers to sell you a ticket on the day at Aguas Calientes or at the site entrance, it is a scam — these tickets are non-transferable and linked to your passport number.
Machu Picchu Peru Travel can assist you in securing your Huayna Picchu ticket as part of a full tour package. As a licensed operator we coordinate your ticket, train, bus, and guide logistics together. See our Machu Picchu Day Trip and Sacred Valley + Machu Picchu 2 Days.
The Huayna Picchu hike is officially graded moderate to challenging (difficulty level 3). Here is what that means in practice:
The hike is achievable for most reasonably fit adults. You do not need to be an experienced hiker or mountaineer. The majority of people who attempt it complete it successfully. What you do need is:
Age requirements: Minimum age is 12 years. Children 12–17 must be accompanied by an adult. There is no maximum age requirement, but older travelers should honestly assess their comfort with steep and exposed terrain. Trekking poles are not permitted on the Huayna Picchu trail (the narrow steps and rope sections require hands). Backpacks larger than 25 x 22 x 50 cm are not permitted.
Your Huayna Picchu ticket gives you access to Circuit 3: The Royalty Route, which covers the lower and central sections of the Machu Picchu citadel. This circuit includes some of the most historically significant structures in the entire sanctuary:
You will not be able to re-enter the citadel after completing Huayna Picchu. Structure your visit so that you see Circuit 3 before the climb (Group 2) or after the climb (Group 1), depending on which entry slot you choose.
Do not bring: Trekking poles (not permitted on the Huayna Picchu trail), drones, tripods, food or drinks other than water, pets.
The best time to hike Huayna Picchu is during the dry season: April through November, with June excluded in 2026 due to the maintenance closure. During this period you can expect:
The rainy season (November – March) is manageable with proper footwear and a rain jacket, and the landscape is outstandingly green and dramatic. However, mist can obscure the views from the summit, and wet stone steps require more caution. The hike is not closed during the rainy season.
Best entry slot: Group 1 (7:00 AM) tends to have clearer conditions before any morning cloud builds up, particularly in the dry season. Group 2 (9:00 AM) typically offers better visibility in the rainy season, as early-morning fog often lifts by mid-morning. Group 1 also allows you to finish the summit early and have the rest of the day in Aguas Calientes before returning to Cusco.
Day of the week: Weekdays (Tuesday through Thursday) are generally less crowded than weekends and the Thursday–Sunday peak. If your dates are flexible, mid-week departures make for a quieter experience on the trail.
Huayna Picchu itself sits at around 2,667–2,720 meters above sea level, which is lower than Cusco (3,400 m). For most visitors who have spent a few days in Cusco, the altitude at Huayna Picchu is not the primary physical challenge — the steepness is. That said, arriving at Machu Picchu without any acclimatization from a lower altitude destination could still cause headaches and reduced energy on the climb.
Standard recommendations:
There are three mountains you can hike at Machu Picchu, each with its own ticket and character. Here is how they compare:
| Huayna Picchu (Route 3A) | Machu Picchu Mountain (Route 1A) | Huchuy Picchu (Route 3B or 3D) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Height above citadel | ~300 m above Machu Picchu | ~650 m above Machu Picchu | Small peak adjacent to Huayna Picchu |
| Altitude | ~2,667–2,720 m | ~3,082 m | Lower than Huayna Picchu |
| Daily permits | 350 | 300 | 200 |
| Difficulty | Moderate–Challenging. Steep, exposed | Challenging. Long ascent, many steps, but less exposed | Easy–Moderate. Short and less steep |
| Round-trip time | 2–3 hours | 3–4 hours | 1–1.5 hours |
| View | Iconic aerial view directly above citadel. The classic perspective. | Panoramic view of citadel and entire Sacred Valley. Wider perspective. | Partial views. More accessible for those wanting a shorter climb. |
| Advance booking needed | 3–6 months. Hardest to get. | 2–3 weeks to 3 months. Often available when Huayna Picchu is sold out. | Less demand. More available. |
| Fear of heights | Not recommended for those with acrophobia | Less exposed, better for those cautious about heights | Fine for those with mild height concerns |
| Age minimum | 12 years | All ages | All ages |
| June 2026 status | Closed all of June 2026 | Open | Open (check for seasonal availability) |
Our recommendation: If Huayna Picchu is sold out for your dates, Machu Picchu Mountain is an excellent alternative. The views are arguably broader (you see the citadel, the entire Sacred Valley, and the surrounding Andean peaks), the trail is less exposed, and permits are more frequently available. For travelers who want a mountain experience but are not comfortable with steep, exposed terrain, Machu Picchu Mountain is the better choice.
All visits to Huayna Picchu begin with getting to Machu Picchu itself. The gateway is Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo), reached by train from Ollantaytambo or Poroy (near Cusco) and then by bus up the mountain to the citadel entrance.
For a Group 1 entry (7:00 AM), you need to be in Aguas Calientes the night before. The first buses from Aguas Calientes to the citadel typically depart around 5:30–6:00 AM. To catch the Group 1 entry, spending a night in Aguas Calientes is essential.
For a Group 2 entry (9:00 AM), it is possible (though a very long day) to take an early morning train from Ollantaytambo and arrive in time. More comfortable is to stay overnight in Aguas Calientes either before or after your visit.
For travelers arriving at Machu Picchu after completing one of our trekking routes, your Huayna Picchu ticket must still be purchased separately via the official government platform and coordinated with your arrival date. We advise booking it at the same time as your trek:
The Huayna Picchu ticket is the hardest single ticket in the Machu Picchu system to obtain. If it is sold out for your dates, here is what to do:
Yes, but it makes for a very long day. For Group 1 (7:00 AM entry), you need to be in Aguas Calientes the night before, making a true same-day return from Cusco impractical. For Group 2 (9:00 AM), an early departure train from Ollantaytambo can get you there in time, and you can return to Cusco the same evening. Most travelers find it much more comfortable to stay one night in Aguas Calientes.
A guide is not mandatory for the Huayna Picchu mountain trail itself. However, for Circuit 3 (the Machu Picchu section), a guide adds substantial value — the Royalty Circuit contains the most historically rich areas of the citadel, and without context much of what you see is just beautiful stone. Our tours include a licensed guide for the citadel section.
Huayna Picchu does not close for ordinary rain. The trail remains open. What changes is footing — wet stone steps require more care and slower movement. Bring a rain jacket and good non-slip footwear, and you will be fine. In the rare event of extreme weather posing a safety risk, park rangers may temporarily suspend access to the mountain.
Not if you follow the trail, use the rope handlines at exposed sections, and do not rush. Accidents that have occurred on the mountain have almost always involved people leaving the trail or taking unnecessary risks at exposed points. Respect the trail boundaries, do not lean over edges for photos, take your time on the descent, and the hike is safe for fit, careful travelers.
No. Each mountain requires its own separate ticket, and the circuits associated with each do not permit crossing between them in a single entry. Each ticket gives you a maximum of 6 hours from entry, and attempting both mountains would far exceed that limit in any case.
The Ministry of Culture has announced that Huayna Picchu is closed all of June 2026 for maintenance. If you purchased a ticket for a June 2026 date, you are entitled to a full refund. Contact tuboleto.cultura.pe or the Ministry of Culture’s official channels to process this.
