Why Visit Machu Picchu on the Rainy Season

Visiting Machu Picchu is an opportunity to get a  experience the wonderful history and mystical nature of the Inca civilization.

You should also consider that Machu Picchu has very sudden weather changes, which makes many travelers wonder if it is worth visiting during the rainy season.
From Machu Picchu Perú Travel, we invite you to discover why the rainy season is actually an ideal time to visit Machu Picchu.

The Best of Visiting Machu Picchu During the Rainy Season

It is often said that the rainy season is not the best time to visit Machu Picchu, but here we will tell you why it can be even better. The Incas built Machu Picchu in such an ingenious way that more than 500 years have passed and it still remains intact despite rains, earthquakes, and natural disasters. A modern construction would not have the same resistance as Machu Picchu.

It is during the rainy season that the ingenuity of its construction truly stands out. As the rain wets the stones, the water flows magnificently through its streets, as if it had been tamed by the Incas. It moves and falls exactly where it should, without interfering with visitors. The sound of the rain is soothing, and the air feels fresh and purifying.

Visiting Machu Picchu in the rain is a different experience—a connection with nature that you shouldn’t avoid.

Myths About Machu Picchu During the Rainy Season

Machu Picchu does not close in February. Only the Inca Trail closes for maintenance, but the citadel and the trains to Machu Picchu remain open all year round.

Why Visit Cusco and Machu Picchu During the Rainy Season?

Fewer Crowds on Machu Picchu

During these months, there are fewer visitors, so you can walk more freely without the obstruction of other travelers.

Machu Picchu at Its Most Lush

February is when Machu Picchu is at its most splendid, surrounded by abundant vegetation and a mystical fog that enhances its charm.

Warmer Weather on Machu Picchu

February is the warmest month of the year in Cusco.
Although humidity increases, temperatures are pleasant for exploring.
In Machu Picchu, the average high is 25°C and the low is 13°C, with rain on about 18 days of the month.

Fewer Tourists on Machu Picchu

If a little rain doesn’t bother you, you’ll enjoy Machu Picchu without the large crowds.
During the high season (June to August), it’s usually packed, but in the rainy season, you can explore the site calmly with more space for yourself.

Machu Picchu Almost All to Yourself

February is the ideal time.

With the Inca Trail closed and many travelers avoiding rainy areas, you can have a more direct and almost intimate connection with Machu Picchu, surrounded by mist and mystery.

No Need for Early Reservations

During the dry season, tickets must be purchased up to six months in advance. In the rainy season, you can usually buy them four to six weeks ahead. Still, we always recommend booking early to avoid last-minute issues.

Cusco and Machu Picchu Turn Green

In February, the valleys are greener and the landscape looks spectacular. Sunny days create a vibrant atmosphere over the Sacred Valley.

Clean and Fresh Air on Machu Picchu

When rain falls on the Andean soil, it releases the pleasant aroma of wet earth known as petrichor.
Breathing this pure mountain air is a unique experience for all five senses.

Carnivals and Cultural Celebrations in Cusco

In February, people in Cusco take to the streets to play with water, foam, and paint. If you enjoy spontaneous fun, you can join in freely—everyone is welcome, and there’s no extra cost.
You just need to have fun and let yourself get splashed!
