How to Get There
To start the hike, first you need to reach Cusco. Cusco is at 3,400 meters (11,200 feet) altitude. From Cusco, you can take a train or hike to the Sacred Valley. The Sacred Valley is at 2,800 meters (9,200 feet). From there, you begin your route to Machu Picchu.
Popular Routes
Inca Trail
The Inca Trail is the most famous route. It is about 43 kilometers (27 miles) long. The hike takes between 4 to 5 days. You pass through mountains, rivers, and forests. The highest point is 4,200 meters (13,780 feet) at the Warmiwañusca Pass.
Salkantay
Another popular route is the Salkantay. It is longer, about 70 kilometers (43 miles). It takes around 5 days. This route is harder and goes by the snowy Salkantay, which is at 5,150 meters (16,900 feet).
Lares
The Lares route is great if you want to see the local culture. It is about 33 kilometers (20 miles) and takes 3 days. You pass through Andean villages and hot springs. The highest point is 4,200 meters (13,780 feet).
