Got Questions About Machu Picchu? We Got Answers

Here are some common questions travelers ask about Machu Picchu trips.

How long are Machu Picchu tours?

Usually one full day. But you can do longer trips too hitting other ruins and spots near Cusco.

Do I need to book Machu Picchu way ahead?

Yep definitely. It gets crazy busy especially in peak season and tickets sell out fast. Book early so you dont miss out. It’s a popular spot you know.

Do I gotta have a guide for Machu Picchu?

Nah it’s not required. But having a guide is pretty cool they tell you all the history and stories making it more interesting. They really know the place.

How do I avoid getting sick from the altitude?

Good question! Best bet is to chill in Cusco for a day or two before going up to Machu Picchu let your body get used to it. Drink lots of water try the local coca tea (‘mate de coca’ they call it here) dont push yourself too hard on day one. Maybe talk to your doc before you fly out. Altitude sickness is real but manageable if you take precautions.

How do you actually get to Machu Picchu?

Most people take a train from Cusco or Ollantaytambo down to Aguas Calientes (the town right below Machu Picchu about 6,693 ft / 2,040 m). From Aguas Calientes you hop on a bus or hike up to the entrance. Or if you’re up for a challenge you can hike the Inca Trail takes a few days but people say it’s incredible like ‘una experiencia bacán’ (a really cool experience).

What are these ‘circuits’ inside Machu Picchu?

Think of them like set paths inside the ruins.

  • Circuit 1 & 2: These usually let you get that classic postcard photo and explore both the upper and lower parts of the city. Circuit 2 is often recommended.
  • Circuit 3: You explore this one with the Machu Picchu Mountain ticket covers the lower part.
  • Circuit 4: This goes with the Huayna Picchu Mountain ticket also covers the lower part. Understanding which circuit your ticket allows is important it’s not always straightforward.

What’s the diff between going alone and a guided tour?

Going alone means you sort everything yourself tickets transport figuring out where to go. A guided tour is easier the guide takes care of logistics tells you stuff so you dont miss the important bits and helps you get more out of it. Less hassle for sure.

How much does a Machu Picchu trip cost?

This depends a lot on what you choose like the hotel tours dates etc. It’s tough to give one price.

Package Type Starting Price (Approx) Notes
Basic Package $340 USD Varies based on inclusions
Customizable Option Depends on choices Add extra tours hotels etc

Note: Prices are just estimates and can change based on season availability and what you pick.

Where can I stay near Machu Picchu?

You’ll stay in Aguas Calientes the town at the bottom. Lots of choices there from fancy hotels to more basic local places something for every budget.

What stuff can’t I bring into Machu Picchu?

Yeah there are rules to protect the place. No big backpacks drones tripods selfie sticks. Don’t bring open food or drinks no pets no weapons. Smoking is a no-go and definitely don’t touch or take any rocks or plants. Just be cool and respect the site ‘causa’ (friend).

What’s Huayna Picchu and how do I climb it?

That’s the big pointy mountain you see behind Machu Picchu in photos. It’s inside the site (around 8,835 ft / 2,693 m). You need a separate ticket booked way in advance cause only a limited number of people can climb per day maybe 400 total. You can buy tickets online or maybe through your tour agency. Be ready though it’s a tough hike steep and narrow in parts good shoes and decent fitness help. The view from the top is ‘chévere’ (awesome).

Why book a package deal?

Main reason? It’s way easier. We handle the planning transport tickets hotels guides sometimes even food. Less headache for you. Plus sometimes it works out cheaper because agencies get deals. Everything is ‘listo’ (ready).

What else can I do besides Machu Picchu?

Lots! You can add on hikes to Humantay Lake or Rainbow Mountain explore more ruins in the Sacred Valley take a tour around Cusco city get a feel for the local culture. Peru has heaps to see.

  • Dry Season (May to October): Usually sunny days clearer views which is great for photos. But it’s also peak tourist season so expect bigger crowds maybe higher prices. Things get booked up fast.
  • Rainy Season (November to April): Fewer crowds greener landscapes maybe lower prices. But expect rain possibly heavy showers and trails might be muddy or misty. January/February often see the most rain. The Inca Trail even closes in February for maintenance.
