How do I avoid getting sick from the altitude?
Good question! Best bet is to chill in Cusco for a day or two before going up to Machu Picchu let your body get used to it. Drink lots of water try the local coca tea (‘mate de coca’ they call it here) dont push yourself too hard on day one. Maybe talk to your doc before you fly out. Altitude sickness is real but manageable if you take precautions.
How do you actually get to Machu Picchu?
Most people take a train from Cusco or Ollantaytambo down to Aguas Calientes (the town right below Machu Picchu about 6,693 ft / 2,040 m). From Aguas Calientes you hop on a bus or hike up to the entrance. Or if you’re up for a challenge you can hike the Inca Trail takes a few days but people say it’s incredible like ‘una experiencia bacán’ (a really cool experience).

What’s the diff between going alone and a guided tour?

Where can I stay near Machu Picchu?
You’ll stay in Aguas Calientes the town at the bottom. Lots of choices there from fancy hotels to more basic local places something for every budget.
What stuff can’t I bring into Machu Picchu?
Yeah there are rules to protect the place. No big backpacks drones tripods selfie sticks. Don’t bring open food or drinks no pets no weapons. Smoking is a no-go and definitely don’t touch or take any rocks or plants. Just be cool and respect the site ‘causa’ (friend).
What’s Huayna Picchu and how do I climb it?
That’s the big pointy mountain you see behind Machu Picchu in photos. It’s inside the site (around 8,835 ft / 2,693 m). You need a separate ticket booked way in advance cause only a limited number of people can climb per day maybe 400 total. You can buy tickets online or maybe through your tour agency. Be ready though it’s a tough hike steep and narrow in parts good shoes and decent fitness help. The view from the top is ‘chévere’ (awesome).
