Altitude sickness is real but manageable if you take precautions.

How do you actually get to Machu Picchu?

Most people take a train from Cusco or Ollantaytambo down to Aguas Calientes (the town right below Machu Picchu about 6,693 ft / 2,040 m). From Aguas Calientes you hop on a bus or hike up to the entrance. Or if you’re up for a challenge you can hike the Inca Trail takes a few days but people say it’s incredible like ‘una experiencia bacán’ (a really cool experience).

What are these ‘circuits’ inside Machu Picchu?

Think of them like set paths inside the ruins.

• Circuit 1 & 2: These usually let you get that classic postcard photo and explore both the upper and lower parts of the city. Circuit 2 is often recommended.
• Circuit 3: You explore this one with the Machu Picchu Mountain ticket covers the lower part.

What’s Huayna Picchu and how do I climb it?

That’s the big pointy mountain you see behind Machu Picchu in photos. It’s inside the site (around 8,835 ft / 2,693 m). You need a separate ticket booked way in advance cause only a limited number of people can climb per day maybe 400 total. You can buy tickets online or maybe through your tour agency. Be ready though it’s a tough hike steep and narrow in parts good shoes and decent fitness help. The view from the top is ‘chévere’ (awesome).

• Rainy Season (November to April): Fewer crowds greener landscapes maybe lower prices. But expect rain possibly heavy showers and trails might be muddy or misty. January/February often see the most rain. The Inca Trail even closes in February for maintenance.
• Shoulder Seasons (April/May & Sept/Oct): Can be a good mix. Maybe fewer crowds than peak season decent chance of good weather but still a possibility of rain.
