5 Things to See and Do in Peru

1. Explore Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu, the famed “lost city of the Incas,” is a must-visit in South America. You can either embark on a 4-day, 3-night trek covering 43 kilometers (26 miles) of Andean trails starting from Ollantaytambo or take a train for a quicker visit. The Inca Trail offers stunning views and arrives at Machu Picchu at dawn, while the train lets you join tour groups for a chance to capture the morning sunrise. Longer 7-8 day hikes are available for a more extended adventure, starting around 2,600 PEN. If hiking isn’t your preference, a day pass is also an option.

2. Visit Lima

Lima offers a vibrant mix of chaos and charm. Explore Miraflores with its seaside views, restaurants, and bars. Don’t miss the Larco Museum for pre-Columbian artifacts, Aliaga House for Peruvian art, and Plaza Mayor for colonial architecture. Dive into colorful markets, visit the unique Cat Park, or find good fortune at the Park of Love. Experience Lima’s nightlife in the Barranco district and savor the city’s famous ceviche. For a local drink, try pisco, a regional brandy.

3. Fly Over the Nazca Lines

The Nazca Lines are ancient geoglyphs in the San José desert and Nazca Valley, featuring over 10,000 lines and 300 figures of plants and animals. While the park is free to visit, a helicopter or plane tour (around 400 PEN) provides a spectacular view of these mysterious formations.

4. Relax at Lake Titicaca

Covering 7,790 square kilometers (3,000 square miles) and sitting at 3,810 meters (12,500 feet), Lake Titicaca is the world’s largest high-altitude lake. Enjoy its deep blue waters, stunning sunsets, and snowy mountain views. Explore the nearby towns with their colonial architecture and markets. Visit the pre-Inca ruins on Isla del Sol, Taquile, and Amantani. The best time to visit is June to August, avoiding the rainy season.

5. Hike the Colca Canyon

Colca Canyon, the world’s second deepest, is located about 4 hours from Arequipa. At 3,270 meters (10,728 feet) deep, it’s twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in some places. Ideal for spotting Andean condors, Colca Canyon offers a range of experiences. A day trip is possible with a tour or bus to Cabanaconde. For a 2-3 day hike including visits to local villages, hot springs, and llama sightings, expect to pay around 150-200 PEN plus an entrance fee of 70 PEN.
